The future of GPUs for average gamers remains confusing: AMD should prioritize the Radeon RX 9070 XT, leaving the non-XT version in the background
The global shortage of memory chips is forcing AMD and its partners to reevaluate their production strategies.
The difficulty in obtaining DRAM components at stable costs has led to a scenario in which models with greater amount of VRAM memory become less economically attractive for manufacturers.
According to information from the international website ProHardVerthis cost pressure is changing the focus within the graphics card lineup based on RDNA 4 architecture.
| Main problem | Shortage and rising prices of DRAM chips. | Increase in the cost of manufacturing video cards. |
| Affected models | Radeon RX 9060 XT, RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT (all with 16 GB GDDR6). | Production becomes less economically viable. |
| AMD Strategy | Focus relocated to higher margin model (RX 9070 XT). | Production of the RX 9070 (non-XT) must be reduced. |
| Reason for prioritization | RX 9070 XT has a higher selling price and higher margin. | Better absorbs the extra cost of memory without major adjustments to the final price. |
| Position of the RX 9070 | Manufacturing cost similar to XT, but lower performance and price. | Low popularity and attractiveness for partner manufacturers. |
| Position of the RX 9060 XT | Only model with 16 GB in its performance segment. | Less vulnerable to cuts, as it is irreplaceable in the current line. |
| Market context | NVIDIA should also prioritize models with less VRAM (e.g. RTX 50 with 8 GB). | Industry adjusts portfolios in the face of cost pressure. |
16GB VRAM models face cost challenges
The line RDNA 4 has three models with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. This configuration typically requires eight separate memory chips per board, a factor that has become a point of financial sensitivity. With the DRAM prices on the risemanufacturing boards with this configuration became more expensive.
O site ProHardVer pointed out that the Radeon RX 9060 XT, RX 9070 e RX 9070 XTall with 16 GB, are directly affected by these market dynamics. AMD even stated that it would absorb part of the rising costs, but the strategy appears to have been revised.
This pressure leads companies to prioritize products with the highest profit margin. Therefore, the AMD would have begun to concentrate its efforts on Radeon RX 9070 XT production to the detriment of the RX 9070 version.
The logic is that the more expensive and higher performance model has a higher margin, which offers more space to accommodate increases without passing them on in full to the end consumer.
RX 9070 XT becomes AMD’s main focus
The model Neither RX 9070 nor XT occupies a complicated position in the portfolio. Its manufacturing cost is close to that of the XT version, but its selling price needs to be lower due to lower performance.
This atypical situation makes the product less interesting for AMD’s partner manufacturers.
Consequently, production tends to migrate to the RX 9070 XT modelwhich has historically been sold between US$ 650 e 800 (in Brazil, it is normally found by R$ 4.200 ~ 5.000), allowing greater flexibility to absorb extra memory costs.
A RX 9070in turn, reached its suggested list price (MSRP) of US$ 549 long before the XT version, which had a MSRP de US$ 599.
This proximity in price, added to the difference in performance, meant that the RX 9070 was considerably less popular.
Data from retailers indicates that its popularity is around 10x times smaller than the RX 9070 XT since launch, which began in March 2025.
Position of the RX 9060 XT remains stable in the market
While the RX 9070 suffers from the current situation, the Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB maintains a safer position.
As it is the only model in its performance segment within the RDNA 4 line to offer this memory capacity, it does not have a direct replacement.
This makes it a product less susceptible to short-term production cutsas it meets a specific market demand for intermediate boards with VRAM generosa.
NVIDIA is also dealing with the same scenario, expecting to prioritize RTX 50 series models with 8GB of memory.

AMD should prioritize the Radeon RX 9070 XT; conclusions
The company signaled that will try to contain cost transfersbut adjustments to the production line are expected.
The situation illustrates a challenge present in the industry: balance technical specifications consumers want with the economic realities of the semiconductor supply chain.
Despite initial promises, both AMD How much NVIDIA are adjusting their tactics as the memory crisis persists.
